Recent News

New York, NY, is one of the largest cities in this country. It is incredibly diverse and multicultural, thrives on economy and tourism, and is rich in history. Unfortunately, it is also has a number of significant problems, not in the least that of addiction and substance abuse. To determine the extent of the problem, public health officials in New York have started to engage in an ongoing piece of research about public perception, cost to health care, and substances that are abused. Statistics on Drug and Alcohol Abuse in New York The first element of the research looks at public perception on the subject of substance abuse. It was found that:
  • 97% of people know someone in the city who uses cannabis.
  • 64% of people believe cannabis should be made available for medicinal purposes.
  • 42% of people first come into contact with substances when they are aged between 18 and 25.
  • 58% of people feel it is easy to purchase cocaine in New York.
  • 90% of people believe meth abuse is a growing problem in the city.
  • 91% of people believe there is a growing problem with prescription drug abuse.
  • 91% of people believe that detox and rehab treatment is the best way to resolve the problem of substance abuse.
The next element of the research looked at the cost to health care. Specifically, it looked at the number of hospital admissions relating to various substances. This found that:
  • 3,059 people were admitted due to heroin.
  • 1,530 people were admitted due to Xanax.
  • 1,376 people were admitted due to cocaine.
  • 1,223 people were admitted due to OxyContin.
  • 1,071 people were admitted due to Percocet.
  • 917 people were admitted due to Lortab.
  • 764 people were admitted due to Vicodin.
  • 611 people were admitted due to meth.
  • 306 people were admitted due to ecstasy.
It should be noted, however, that while these statistics point to the fact that prescription drug abuse is a serious problem, it is important to remember that not everybody who was admitted abused their prescription or used these substances for non-medical purposes. The final piece of the research was on the levels of drug and alcohol abuse in the city. This uncovered that:
  • 367,050 people drink alcohol to excess.
  • There are 142,232 people in New York who abuse illicit substances, 22,473 of whom also drink alcohol.
  • The most common substances of abuse are cannabis, crack and powder cocaine, heroin, and stimulants.
On the basis of these statistics, New York has put in place a number of intervention efforts. These aim to target firstly those who do not yet use substances, providing them with healthy alternatives. Secondly, these efforts aim to make treatment more available to those who need it. To achieve this, various awareness campaigns have been started on the existence of inpatient and outpatient detox rehab facilities. Additionally, New York has opened a number of drug courts, where people can be ordered to seek treatment to be spared a prison sentence.
